Global Logistics Cluster Support Cell (GLCSC) Information Management Intern – GIS Unit Geo-database SDI-T (Spatial data Infrastructure for Transport)

The Logistics Cluster is mandated by the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) to complement and co-ordinate the logistics capabilities of co-operating humanitarian agencies during large-scale complex emergencies and natural disasters. To support the exchange of information amongst agencies and its operations, the Global Logistics Cluster Support Cell offers to run an Information Management Unit. This unit supports actively operational activities and ensures continuous improvement and dissemination of logistics information products and services. It ensures that the Logistics Cluster contributes to humanitarian relief, recovery and reconstruction.
The requirements governing an Internship with the World Food Programme are as follows:
All applicants must:
a) have completed at least two years’ undergraduate studies when joining WFP as an Intern
b) be currently enrolled in a university or graduate school and have attended courses in the last 12 months
c) be fluent in English
d) if selected, be able to present a medical certificate (dated 30 days or less from the beginning of internship) stating that he/she is fit to work and travel.

Under the immediate supervision of the Global Logistics Cluster Support Cell Information Management Officer in Rome, he/she will perform the following tasks:
1. Develop a methodology of comparison of different roads and infrastructure data/layer and geo-database using Spatial data infrastructure for transport system. SDI-T.
2. Work with GIS Coordination Officer to establish priority data collection/processing activities based on emerging information requirements and update SDI-T database
3. Ensure that the GLCSC GIS Unit and other collaborating agencies are operating with the most up-to-date geographic data available on roads and infrastructure;
4. Ensure the smooth delivery of newly acquired data from the field for cleaning and processing on;
5. Process and clean incoming field data for delivery to Cartographic Officer.
6. Collect and analyze other information sources such as situation reports, field bulletins, and other situational reporting from operational agencies in their area of responsibility, and translate the information content into geographic data;
7. As required, assist the GIS Coordination Officer and Cartographic Officer in the production of maps and other GIS products in order to meet tight deadlines.
Qualifications and experience
- Student with knowledge and experience in Geo-database using SDI technology within interest for international humanitarian organizations (UN and International NGOs) and/or complex humanitarian emergencies environments;
- Knowledge of all these languages/platform: Experience in Database and GIS management (MySQL, PostGresSQL, ORACLE, ARCGIS 9.3, WMS, ESRI personal Geodabase or other) an asset; Some graphic design capability would be desirable;
- Knowledge of Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, MS Office - Word, Excel. HTML, XHTML, XML and CSS knowledge. Ajax interest;
- Courtesy, tact and ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds;
- Working knowledge of two official UN languages (English + French). Italian a plus;
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing;
- Ability to work under high pressure.
N.B.: Indemnity: US$ 700/months (function of the UN rate system)
